Why Photo Critique?

We all get to a point on our photography journey where we feel we aren't progressing. Where we get stuck in a creative rut taking the same images over and over again. Sometimes these images are amazing, but they're still the same and we need a push to create something different and new. Or sometimes we question if the images we're making are even good at all. This is where Photo Critique becomes crucial for us to push through to the next stage of our journey.

Photo Critique is necessary for everyone, regardless of skill level, experience, how long you've been in business, awards won, etc, etc. We're all a bit biased about our own work and when it's so personal and close to us it can become hard to see our own areas of strength and weakness. This is where we can ALL benefit from photo critique.

Photo critique is one of the most powerful tools available to improve your work and will become the backbone for your growth. Often people panic and run for the hills when the hear about a photo critique. It can be a bit terrifying to put yourself and your work that means so much to you out there, but I promise it really isn't a scary experience! If you're open minded, photo critique is an opportunity to learn in an honest, SAFE and constructive setting.

Photo critique is NOT photo criticism!

Although it is lovely to hear, and can be a nice boost to our ego, photo critique also isn't our friends and family commenting how amazing our images are. Nor is it the number of likes or followers we have on social media. Or the number of awards won, images published, etc, etc.

Photography, like all art, is subjective to the viewer. We all come from different backgrounds full of different experiences and thus can offer various opinions on your photos. Photo critique lets these different impressions and opinions of your photo be heard. But more than just a 'I like it' or 'I don't like it' (neither which are helpful or a critique), photo critique offers technical, content and composition advice. It will help you improve your vision, work on your technique and take things to the next level!

So why is it so important?

  • You will find out what is working and what isn't working in your images
  • You'll learn how to create better images
  • You'll receive constructive feedback and a clearer direction going forward
  • You may learn a new technique or a new way of different things
  • You'll expand your vision for future images
  • You'll become better at self-critique

Between Kelly and myself, we've photographed in over 100 homes. We've photographed countless bumps, births, babies and families. We've taken thousands (and thousands!) of images of our kids, husbands, pets, homes, self-portraits, parents, siblings, gardens, holidays, parties and our everydays...if you can think of it, we've probably photographed it! In our photo critiques we take our experiences and show you how you're absolutely killing it and how you can make it even better. Individual images and individual, direct feedback that's just for you from both of us. If you think we might be a good fit to help you smash your photography goals, check out our Mentoring offerings, including both individual and group photo critiques.
